Naturopathic Management of PMDD – what works?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome affecting 3-8% of women worldwide. Symptoms may begin up to two weeks prior to menses, resolving soon after the onset of menstruation and significantly interfere with daily functioning. Research shows that women suffering from PMDD have a hypersensitive response to normal hormonal fluctuations in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.

Allopathic management advocates SSRI’s as a first line treatment for PMDD, however research estimates that up to 40% of women may not respond to SSRI’s. Naturopathic management, utilising herbal medicines, nutrition & lifestyle strategies can thus form an important strategy to be used to support women with PMDD to reduce the severity and burden of symptoms.
