The Imperitive of Te Tiriti Based Practice

The Waitangi Tribunal WAI2575 health outcome report concluded that the health sector has substantively failed to deliver equitable health outcomes for whānau.

A major driver of the reforms of the health system are to embed health equity and engage more deeply with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

As a seventh-generation Pākehā New Zealander I believe Te Tiriti outlines the terms and conditions of non-Māori settlement in Aotearoa. It is also a key component of ethical health practice.

This kōrero will provide an overview of what is Te Tiriti-based practice using the example of my own practice as an activist scholar and public health practitioner. This mahi is deeply rewarding and other times profoundly uncomfortable.

It is relational work that requires reflective practice, sharing power, active listening, knowing who you are and having an open heart.
