Founder and former R&D and Technical Director of Phytomed, an Aotearoa New Zealand based manufacturer and exporter of herbal medicines for both practitioners and consumers. Phil is a longstanding advocate for growing the New Zealand natural health product industry, and the ethical and sustainable use of indigenous plants as medicines. He is a founding board member of Natural Health Products New Zealand (NHPNZ), the national industry body established in 2002, and was President of the NZ Association of Medical Herbalists from 2018 to 2021. He is a frequent lecturer at natural medicine colleges and universities, regular presenter at conferences in New Zealand and overseas, and writes and podcasts extensively on herbal subjects for practitioner and consumer publications. Phil has also worked in clinical practice as a phytotherapist, for 30 years. Phil grew up in a predominantly Māori community on the East Coast of the North Island, and is a strong advocate for improved patient access to medical herbalism within Te Whatu Ora and our health services, as a cost-effective and efficacious intervention for many chronic and age related conditions for which Māori are disproportionately affected.
